PFFL at a Glance Founded: 2010
Parent Company: RPT Holdings PTE LTD
Headquarters: Singapore
PFFL Commissioner: Paul Tenney
The PFFL was hatched in a "Eureka!" moment back in 2005, but took five years for your Commissioner to launch the inaugural season in 2010. Who is this "Commissioner" character? The PFFL was founded by Paul Tenney, who originally grew up in Seattle, WA, attended Stanford University, and moved to Singapore in 2010.
Commissioner Tenney has been a Fantasy Football freak since he first played in 1987 at age 8. In 2001, he joined the world-renouned Fantasy Football League, 12 Wiens -- The 3rd Best League in North America, as voted by themselves -- which unknowingly set him on a path towards creating the most significant innovation in Fantasy Football history.
In 12 Wiens, the league is always organized into three divisions: Gold (for the 1st-4th place teams from the previous year), Silver (5th-8th from the previous year) and Bronze (sometimes called "poop" for the 9th-12th place guys). At their annual Fantasy Football Draft Weekend, held in a destination selected by the previous year's winner, your division association wasn't just about bragging rights, it was about
privileges. The Gold division gets the best hotel room and rental car, while the Bronze league gets the crappiest room.
But therein lied a bigger idea...what if you applied this idea, where your finish from the previous year impacts your standing for the next year, to a broader group of folks? What if you got several leagues together, and the top guys from those leagues would actually
move up to form a "winner's only" league. What if you organized these leagues by "tiers" to build a broader pecking order of who was good and who was bad? What if you repeated this, year after year, and kept adding more and more leagues...more and more players?
Well, what you'd end up with is a few things:
The best-of-the-best would rise to the top, and could truly say they were the best in the world.
Even with a very small entry fee you could offer HUGE prize payouts
You could infinitely expand until really the whole Fantasy Football world were under one roof. This could become
what fantasy football is.
Eureka, indeed.
Oh yeah, wasn't this supposed to be an "about us" page, not a history of where this all came from? Right. We are currently a two-man operation, with your Commish running the show and our intrepid web developer building out all the infrastructure we're going to need to support the millions of people who will some day be part of this great thing called the PFFL.
We would love your help though too -- as we go on, we want this to become more and more a user-driven site, where most of the content, the articles and analysis, the management of the individual leagues, etc., all comes from you. We create the structure, you make it happen.
